Atlanta’s Smart Choice for Sewer Rehabilitation and Pipelining

Cities in Georgia, including Atlanta and surrounding suburbs, are working toward a better future for the underground sewer system. Currently, there are many state-of-the-art developments in wastewater treatments, storm water and collection systems. Atlanta is working to alleviate the millions of gallons of storm water which has pervaded the system. Because of this, the best method of rehabilitation is the Cured-in-Place Pipelining (CIPP) method of relining the water systems. Several upcoming sewer projects were designed with efficiency, as well as time management, in mind. Damaged and under-performing pipelines are also a consideration for DeKalb County. Emory University’s Clever Alternative for Water Treatment

Atlanta’s Emory University is a private institution that was founded in 1836. The University has ranked in the 2016 edition of Best Colleges and National Universities.  The University is committed to sustainable living on campus. Researching water treatment and supply has become a well-established initiative within classrooms.  The University has used experimentation to reevaluate the water treatment process. The main goal is to reclaim wastewater through an ecological treatment processes, mainly hydroponics.  It’s called the WaterHub, a compact facility that uses bacteria on plant roots to clean wastewater. It reduces potable water demand on campus by approximately 35 percent and could help build discernment regarding reclamation. Atlanta’s MO for Optimum Stormwater Management

The city of Atlanta has developed a plan to reduce stormwater runoff by up to 225 million gallons annually. With this strategy, stormwater runoff will be managed through a cost-effective grey and green infrastructure design, which will accelerate green space development in urban communities. Green infrastructure infuses elements intended to mimic nature to more effectively manage urban stormwater and reduce flooding, erosion and sewer overflows. In addition to increased capacity reassurance, green infrastructure provides community attributes and buildup. Currently, more than 10 green infrastructure projects are taking place in the city. The layout for this initiative totals approximately $1.06 billion and identifies the essentials for sustaining, restoring and modernizing the facilities and infrastructure at the cornerstone of the water system.

DeKalb County’s Sewer Geography Information System

DeKalb County is in the process of implementing an infrastructure mapping system for the sewer system.   In accordance with the Environmental Protection Agency, the City is upgrading its underground infrastructure in an effort to reduce sanitary sewer overflows.  In doing this, the need to fully assess the condition of the pipeline is necessary.  The County has consistently worked to improve its sewer mapping capabilities.  Currently, the sewer system mapping and inventory survey project is being completed by County contractors. The project terms include information regarding mapping, inventory, and recording of geographical location of all public and private sanitary sewer manholes (by identifying numbers), public and private sewer mains, force mains and air valves, service line cleanouts, and lift stations
