Currently, there are many state-of-the-art developments in wastewater treatments, storm water and collection systems. Atlanta is working to alleviate the millions of gallons of storm water which has pervaded the system. Atlanta Inspects Pipelines to Inhibit Tree Roots in Sewer System

The city of Atlanta has been dealing with tree roots, as have other cities within the area. Roots can build up inside the sewer system and cause clogs and problematic backups. These clogs can interfere with the daily use of your fixtures. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent this nuisance. DeKalb County’s Sewer Overflow and Smoke Testing Advisory

DeKalb County recently completed 400 miles of sewer pipe smoke testing and identified public and private lines in need of repair. The smoke testing of sewer lines is one type of required assessment outlined in the federal Consent mandate which was imposed over five years ago. The smoke testing consists of a nontoxic smoke which is inserted in a section of residential sewer pipeline. If smoke escapes through the ground, it indicates a leak in the sewer pipe. In addition, the test also detects possible breaks in homeowner’s sewer laterals, stormwater tie-ins, and any other possible outcome that allows either stormwater to get into the system, or wastewater to leak out of the system. Fulton County Establishes Sewer Line Warranty

Cities in and around Atlanta are getting with the program. The sewer and water line warranty program. Fulton County is now offering homeowners various options for coverage to sewer lines that can potentially leak and become problematic.  It is almost always unexpected and never timely when the sewer backs up or the water line bursts. And much of the time the homeowner is responsible; making it a costly mishap when paying out of pocket. The average water leak in Fulton County costs approximately $1,500 to repair. Emory University’s Clever Alternative for Water Treatment

Atlanta’s Emory University is a private institution that was founded in 1836. The University has ranked in the 2016 edition of Best Colleges and National Universities.  The University is committed to sustainable living on campus. Researching water treatment and supply has become a well-established initiative within classrooms.  The University has used experimentation to reevaluate the water treatment process. The main goal is to reclaim wastewater through an ecological treatment processes, mainly hydroponics.  It’s called the WaterHub, a compact facility that uses bacteria on plant roots to clean wastewater. It reduces potable water demand on campus by approximately 35 percent and could help build discernment regarding reclamation. Atlanta’s MO for Optimum Stormwater Management

The city of Atlanta has developed a plan to reduce stormwater runoff by up to 225 million gallons annually. With this strategy, stormwater runoff will be managed through a cost-effective grey and green infrastructure design, which will accelerate green space development in urban communities. Green infrastructure infuses elements intended to mimic nature to more effectively manage urban stormwater and reduce flooding, erosion and sewer overflows. In addition to increased capacity reassurance, green infrastructure provides community attributes and buildup. Currently, more than 10 green infrastructure projects are taking place in the city. The layout for this initiative totals approximately $1.06 billion and identifies the essentials for sustaining, restoring and modernizing the facilities and infrastructure at the cornerstone of the water system.

Atlanta’s Memorial Park and Flooding Prevention

Flooding and sewer overflows have been an ongoing problem for Atlanta’s Memorial Park for decades. City watershed management officials are now planning to spend about $400,000 over the next three to nine months to raise five manholes on a sewer line, through the park, by approximately 2 feet in order to keep water from flowing into the sewer line and causing further damage.  Additionally, plans will be expedited on more than $30 million in other repairs, including the rehabilitation of a 90-inch pipe installed in 1910 that runs beneath the park. Recently, flooding on Peachtree Creek sent sewage flowing into the playground and other areas of Atlanta’s Memorial Park located in Buckhead, leaving nearby residents in a state of concern.

Gainesville Identifies Problematic Issues for Sewer Structure

The city of Gainesville is working to efficiently address the problems arising from aging sewer pipes, and the costly road washouts that have been associated with this.  New state and federal water quality regulations have prompted the need for a self-sustaining fee program to pay for storm water infrastructure upgrades. The initial fee proposed will charge $1 for every 1,000 square feet of impervious surface on residential, commercial, nonprofit and government property. There are more than 124 million square feet of impervious surfaces in Gainesville. Impervious surfaces include driveways, parking lots, and any surface that does not allow water to be absorbed into the ground. Department officials proposed the fee to provide a dedicated funding source to pay for improvements
