Emergency Repairs to Atlanta, DeKalb County Pipes

Emergency Repairs to Atlanta, DeKalb County Pipes

Recently, crews had to replace 300 feet of aging 30-inch-diameter concrete sewer pipe, which was deemed a public safety hazard. The repairs began on Jan. 22 and cost approximately $700,000. These repairs are an effort to comply with the county’s consent decree with the Environmental Protection Agency and Environmental Protection Division. According to the decree, DeKalb must take measures to reduce the number of sanitary sewer spills in the county. The deadline for implementing changes under the consent decree is June 2020. Approximately one-third of the county’s total sewer pipes have been assessed. The pipes in the worst condition were given a ranking and a recommendation for replacement while pipes in good condition would need to be reassessed in 10

DeKalb County’s Sewer Overflow and Smoke Testing Advisory

DeKalb County recently completed 400 miles of sewer pipe smoke testing and identified public and private lines in need of repair. The smoke testing of sewer lines is one type of required assessment outlined in the federal Consent mandate which was imposed over five years ago. The smoke testing consists of a nontoxic smoke which is inserted in a section of residential sewer pipeline. If smoke escapes through the ground, it indicates a leak in the sewer pipe. In addition, the test also detects possible breaks in homeowner’s sewer laterals, stormwater tie-ins, and any other possible outcome that allows either stormwater to get into the system, or wastewater to leak out of the system. The rehabilitation and repair of public

Heavy Rain Prompts Sewer Overhaul in Valdosta

Many parts of the nation are experiencing heavier than usual rainfall.  This also means there is a better chance of sewer overflows and leaky pipelines. The City of Valdosta has had its share and is now undergoing a sewer overhaul.  Recently, the amount of rain totaled 7.5 inches causing four manholes to overflow, as well as, 257,000 gallons of wastewater to flow into Sugar Creek.  The manholes overflowed from the Force main and are in the process of being rehabilitated. While the project is underway, it will most likely continue through the summer of next year.   The sewer upgrade will replace a 54″ gravity main sewer that runs along the Withlacoochee River.  This installation comes with the expectation of

The downtown area of Hiram has been busy with sewer construction. The City is in the process of installing an enhancement to the sewer system and lift station. The upgrade is expected to be completed at the end of November. The primary roadway affected is Main Street from Arnold Lane to the northeast and Hwy 92 to the southwest. This project will also continue through South Forty subdivision along South Forty Pass east and west. There has been and will continue to be intermittent road closures and delays as the sewer and water lines are being installed. Interesting fact: The Eastern Continental Divide, a continental divide in the U.S. that separates the Gulf of Mexico drainage from the watersheds that
