This week the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the Captain Planet Foundation as a recipient of an Environmental Education (EE) Grant. The Atlanta-based non-profit was selected in the latest round of awards under the EE Grants Program. The mission of the Captain Planet Foundation is to give the next generation of environmental stewards an active understanding and appreciation for the natural world in which they live. The unique program of funding and supporting hands-on environmental projects is designed to encourage innovative initiatives that inspire and empower children and youth around the world as they work individually and collectively creating solutions in their homes, schools and communities.
The Foundation’s goal is also to implement the “Environmental Stewardship Grant-in-a-Box” model to promote education by advancing standards-based learning in K-12 science education by promoting environmental stewardship as a prime instructional strategy. Each “Grant-in-a-Box” consists of a series of outdoor, experiential learning activities that substitute for lessons traditionally taught in the classroom, meeting the same curriculum standards. This longstanding, highly competitive grants program supports EE projects that increase public awareness about environmental issues and provide participants with the skills to take responsible actions to protect the environment. The program provides financial support for projects that design, demonstrate, and/or disseminate environmental education practices, methods or techniques. For over 20 years, EPA has distributed between $2 million and $3.5 million in grant funding per year, for a total of approximately $65.5 million supporting more than 3,600 grant projects.
